Michael Griffith
CCW’s current Chairman pays tribute to Michael
Griffith

It is with great sadness that the Countryside Council for Wales
learnt of the death of its former Chairman, Michael Griffith
CBE.
Michael Griffith, 75, a farmer and landowner from Trefnant,
Denbighshire, served as CCW’s first Chairman and held that post for
a ten year period between 1990 and 2000.
In paying tribute to Michael Griffith, CCW’s current Chairman,
John Lloyd Jones said:
“Michael was completely committed to public
service. He was an inspirational choice to be the first Chairman of
CCW, and was very influential in steering how the organisation
matured. He placed great emphasis on creating partnerships with
landowners, voluntary bodies and other organisations.
“One of his many achievements was the
development of the pilot Tir Cymen agri-environment scheme and its
transition into the all Wales Tir Gofal scheme. This work sums up
his passionate belief that nature conservation can go hand in hand
with environmentally friendly farming.”
Many in CCW who worked alongside him have their own cherished
tales and memories of Michael. He had a deep love and understanding
of the countryside and brought a shrewd and pragmatic approach to
the organisation.
We extend our sympathy to Michael Griffith’s family.
