Deadline approaching for Liverpool Bay consultation

There is still an opportunity for people to comment on the proposal to make Liverpool Bay a Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds. The closing date is Friday 26 February 2010.

Common scoter

If Liverpool Bay becomes a SPA, it would become part of the European network of protected areas on land and sea, known as Natura 2000, designated to safeguard Europe's most important areas for wildlife.

Liverpool Bay is one of the most important areas in Britain for populations of common scoter and red throated diver that spend the winter in our coastal waters.

Feedback on the proposed SPA will help shape the final proposal that the UK Government makes to the European Commission later this year.
