them .
The Wales Coastal Access Improvement Programme
The Wales Coastal Access Improvement Programme is a
six-year programme (2007-2013) to improve and promote public
access, on foot, on horseback and by bicycle, to the Welsh
coastline.

It is being funded by the Welsh Assembly Government who have
made money available to CCW to grant-aid all of the coastal local
authorities in Wales, each of which is developing and delivering
local coastal access programmes. Each of the authorities is
required to establish a Local Partnership of stakeholders to input
into programme development and delivery plans.
in 2007/08 £1.5 million was invested in the Programme, with £2
million allocated in 2007/08.
Purposes of the Programme
- The encourage and enable the public, both locals and visitors,
to enjoy the coastline of Wales.
- To encourage and enable more people to enjoy physical
recreation at the coast thus helping in efforts to become a fitter,
healthier nation.
- To make coastal access a 'flagship' tourism product, thus
bringing economic benefit to coastal communities.
The Programme consists of two geographically based components -
the Wales Coast Path and the Wales Coastal Zone.
The Wales Coast Path will be a continuous path around the
country, available for walkers throughout and cyclists and
horseriders where practicable. It will be as near to the coast as
legally and physically practicable, whilst fully taking into
account the needs of health and safety, land management and
conservation. It is hoped to officially open the Path in 2012.
The Wales Coastal Zone extends 2 kilometres inland from the
coast. The intention is to link this zone to the coast and the
Wales Coast Path by developing walking, cycling and equestrian
opportunities to create:
- links between the coast and settlements, services and other
points of interest
- circular walks and rides
- alternative routes for the Wales Coast Path

Advice To The Welsh Assembly Government Extending Access To The Coast 2006
The Welsh Assembly Government instructed CCW to “scope work on extending
public access to the coast with recommendations on possible implementation options
being submitted to the Assembly Government by February 2006.” This derives
from the commitment in ‘Wales: A Better Country’ to extend access to coastal areas
after the initial access to open country is established and by 2008/09.
