Landscape & wildlife

Wales' dramatic and beautiful landscape is home to some significant UK populations of important species.  This extremely rich tapestry of life has to be cherished. The management of our land, species and habitats amounts to the responsible management of the entire nation's natural heritage.

Spotlight on flowering plants

Flower

With over 1,300 native and established species of flowering plants, conifers and ferns, Wales has a rich and intriguing flora...and there are probably hundreds more 'microspecies' still to be described.

Protecting our landscape

We have some of the most diverse and appealing landscapes in the world.  Well over a quarter of the land surface in Wales is protected because of its high quality landscapes.

Gripping geology

Once an important formation or landform is damaged or destroyed, we can never recreate it. The geological make-up of Wales is both varied and distinctive.

Habitat & species

Habitat & species

Wales has some of the most unusual species of animal you could imagine - whether in the ocean depth or skirting the lofty peaks of Snowdonia.

Priority species
We have a special responsibility to ensure that the requirements of our very rare species are understood

Managing land and sea

Agriculture, housing developments, fishing, forestry, recreation and sport are all vital to prosperity in Wales. But the increased demands we make of our land and seas mean our environment is under pressure.
