Habitats & species

Wales has an impressive array of habitats teeming with wildlife - whether in the ocean depths or skirting the lofty peaks of Snowdonia, CCW invites you to join us on a tour of our country's habitats and species

Life on the Land

Wales is a land full of beautiful landscapes.  But these landscapes are also a diverse range of habitats and a home to myriad species.

Habitats:
Mountains and valleys, heathlands and coast, woods and farms, even our urban and industrial areas - almost everywhere in Wales is home to something

Species:
Find out about the animals and plants that flourish on and in our land

Protected Species:
Some species need a little more help from us than others

Our Ocean World

From the cormorants drying their wings in the sun to the dolphins splashing playfully offshore to the barnacles and keel worms that thrive in our swift currents - Wales' marine species and their habitats are just as varied, dramatic and colourful as the best of our mountain scenery.  Dive in and explore ...

Habitats:
our coast, seashore, estuaries and the open sea all provide particular habitats for specially adapted marine animals and plants

Species:
Seals, turtles, dolphins, porpoises, whales, otters, fish and seabirds - who could ask for a richer tableau

Invasive species:
Not all the species that we currently find in our marine environment have evolved here naturally!

Every lake and pool

In every lake and pond, every river and stream, you could find something of interest ...

Habitats:
Learn more about Wales' rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, canals and ditches, and how we work to conserve them

Species:
You never know what you might find in even the puddles and ditches of Wales!

Biodiversity Action Plan

In the UK 391 species and 45 habitats have been listed as priority species and have action plans.  Of these, 175 species and 38 habitats are relevant to Wales
