Protected species – mammals
All wild mammals are protected from cruelty by
the Wild Mammals Protection Act 1996. It is an offence to
intentionally cause unnecessary suffering to any wild mammal.
Some mammals receive additional protection from the Wildlife and
Countryside Act 1981 and some of those animals receive even more
protection from the Habitats Regulations 1994.
Some mammals such as deer and badgers are protected by specific
legislation.
