Managing land, water and sea

Agriculture, housing developments, transport, fishing, forestry, recreation and sport are all vital to prosperity in Wales. But the demands we make of our land and seas, together with the effects of climate change, mean our environment is under increasing pressure. We need to protect our environment and conserve biodiversity. We need to support economic development. To achieve both these aims, all stakeholders need to work together in an integrated approach to managing our land, water and seas.

What we do

Think sustainable
Imagine a world where everybody cares for and values the environment.  That's what CCW works towards achieving here in Wales.  At CCW we want to see the land and sea used in a sustainable way for the benefit of both our wildlife and our people.

Water policy

Using freshwater wisely
We use rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, canals, ponds and ditches for water supply, waste disposal, electricity generation, navigation, fisheries, agriculture and recreation.  We need to ensure that these uses do not threaten the vast range of freshwater and wetland biodiversity we have in Wales.

Marine Policies

Marine futures
We need to make sure that our marine environment is sustainable in the long term through strong and relevant policy.

Marine Planning and Management

Water is everything
The sea around Wales has helped shape our culture and economy.  Protecting and improving the quality of this environmental resource is important. We need effective planning and management systems to support both our marine environment and our economy in the long term.

Marine SAC Conservation Objectives

Reg 33 Advice
Under Regulation 33 of the Habitats Regulations we have a responsiblity to tell the relevant authorities (the various statutory authorities and agencies responsible for the European Marine Sites) what the conservation objectives for the sites are, and also to tell them what activities may cause damage or disturbance to the special features.

Managing forestry and woodlands

Forest thoughts
Almost 14% of the land area of Wales is covered by woodland. Trees and woods are key features of the Welsh landscape...

Agriculture

Supporting land use
In Wales, agriculture has a vital economic, cultural and environmental role to play within our rural communities.
