Protecting our landscape

We have some of the most diverse and appealing landscapes in the world.  Well over a quarter of the land surface in Wales is protected because of its high quality landscapes.  They are important for our social, environmental and economic well-being, attracting visitors and businesses alike.

Special landscapes and sites

Wales is full of beautiful places. 30% of Wales' land and waters has been designated as 'special' - either by UK, European or International law.

Protected Landscapes
National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Nature Reserves and other protected landscapes.

European and International Designations
Natura 2000, Ramsar, Council of Europe and UNESCO designations.

Sustainable Development
A Welsh Assembly Government initiative to enhance and conserve the quality of our landscapes.

National Nature Reserves
There are 71 National Nature Reserves (NNRs) in Wales ranging in size from half a hectare to nearly 8,000 hectares.
