Further information on SSSIs

SSSIs in Wales

As the statutory conservation agency for Wales, CCW is primarily responsible for providing information on SSSIs in Wales. Contact CCW’s Enquiry Line on 0845 130 6229 or email: enquiries@ccw.gov.uk

Wherever possible, information is made available via CCW's website. The Protected Sites and Landscapes map shows names, locations, area and boundaries of SSSIs. And you can download digital boundary data for use in your own Geographical Information System (GIS).

CCW also publishes a booklet entitled Sites of Special Scientific Interest: A guide for landownersand occupier; available free of charge from the Enquiry Line.

Species information on SSSIs

Local Record Centres

Species lists and distribution maps for species recorded on SSSIs in Wales can be obtained from your Local Record Centre. You can also contribute your own wildlife observations to share with others.

National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway

Alternatively, you can search for distribution maps and species records through the NBN Gateway.

On the home page, go to "Shortcuts to information > Find a site report by name or map".

Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

GBIF provides an international perspective by providing access to the world’s biodiversity data. A wide range of countries and organisations, including the UK’s NBN Gateway, participate in GBIF and have made their data available here, which can be viewed on Google Earth.

SSSIs elsewhere in the UK

Information is available from the statutory conservation agencies as follows:

England: Natural England SSSI pages

Scotland: Scottish Natural Heritage SSSI pages

Northern Ireland: Northern Ireland Environment Agency Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) pages

UK: The Joint Nature Conservation Committee co-ordinates and undertakes work across the UK on behalf of the four country agencies. JNCC is responsible for reporting on the status of SSSIs (for example, the Common Standards Monitoring for Designated Sites: First Six Year Report) and for the production and updating the Guidelines for the selection of Biological SSSIs.
